L’Oréal fully supports the aim to eliminate animal testing. We are aware of consumer thinking on this issue, and our actions to find alternative methods, demonstrate our commitment to sustainable development and respect for the planet.

 L’Oréal has not used laboratory animals for the testing of its finished cosmetic products for 20 years. (This includes all products developed for the different brands within the L’Oréal group). For many years, the Group has made significant efforts to review its product safety testing methods to ensure that it continues to innovate while respecting its commitment to finding alternative solutions to animal testing.

International regulations require that raw materials are tested for safety purposes before being used.

Thanks to 100 years of knowledge in the field of cosmetic ingredients, 30 years of research into alternative testing methods, and to a huge investment in its ability to develop human skin and cornea models, (Episkin and SkinEthic),  L’Oréal is today in a position to meet the 11 March 2009 ban introduced by the 7th amendment to the EU Cosmetics Directive.  This ban prohibits testing on animals and the marketing of products for which local or single exposure tests on animals for which local or single exposure tests on animals have been used after March 11, 2009. For other more complex tests, the deadline has been extended to 2013.

L’Oréal is a leader in the field of research into alternative methods : it is actively contributing to develop replacement alternatives and is involved in cutting edge research both in Europe, the US, China and Japan. As an example Episkin, which was developed by L’Oréal, is now validated as a replacement alternative to animal testing for skin irritation.

To address the issue of the full replacement of animal testing for the remaining tests covered by the 2013 deadline, such as systemic toxicity tests,  L’Oréal is working closely with members of the cosmetics industry, as well as across different industry sectors and with the European Commission, as well as in the context of a European partnership (EPAA). The European Commission intends to take stock of progress made in research in this area in 2011.”

Then, I just got back from a full day’s work doing the two exercise programs I am developing with a wonderful group of boomers and seniors who volunteered to be my guinea pigs. We all had a really good time and I learned a lot from them about what works, what needs tweeking, etc. They were a wonderful group, randomly picked to come into Darren Capik’s studio. ET and People Magazine stopped by to watch and film and I was interviewed and I am wiped!!! I think I’ll go take a hot Epsom Salts bath before we go out to dinner.

I met Denise Austin yesterday. She is a real dynamo, overflowing with positive energy and generosity. She will join the roster of fitness celebrities that will be coming together to make May 1st a memorable event. I can’t yet go into detail about what it will be but stay tuned. Katrina Hodgson is a young fitness expert with more degrees and credentials to her name than most 80 year old physiologists. She also has an online exercise program. She is working with me on my new dvds. Funny, she even looks like she could be part of the Fonda clan. I have first cousins who could be her sister.

Next week we’re getting together with a group of seniors to go through the program with them to be sure they feel comfortable doing it, like it and would want to do it over and over. I gotta have their input. In the old days I had my own JF Workout studio as a laboratory to try things out. Now I have to create the lab. This is how I learn what works and what doesn’t. I’m so excited to be at this again after twenty years.

And now finally, I have the rest of the day to write my book. Days like this are  a real treat. Ain’t I lucky?

I only just got the photos from the Valentine’s Day party thrown at the Chateau Marmont by June Newton, the lively, brave widow of Helmut Newton. Many of her long-time friends were there. Some are also old friends of mine. Bob Shaye was there but only for cocktails so he wasn’t in the photos of our table. Irving Blum was there who had one of the great galleries of modern American art (he’s retired now) and was close friends with Dennis Hopper, Brooke Hayward and me. I hadn’t seen him in ages. Author Scott Berg was there. I got to know him when he wrote the fine authorized biography of Katharine Hepburn and we compared notes.

Bob Evans complimented me on my new, short haircut and I said, “Thanks. I just had some ‘work’ done on my chin and neck and had the bags taken away from under my eyes so I decided it would be good to get a new hair cut so people will think it’s my new hair.” He thought that was so funny he actually toasted me for doing what he said he’d never heard anyone do before: admit they’d had work done. I was planning on blogging about it anyway so who cares? I’m writing a book about aging so I couldn’t very well NOT talk about it. It’s been 2 weeks. I was in front of the camera all day yesterday and was photographed at Eve Ensler’s luncheon 9 days after the procedure so, obviously, it went well. I swore in 2000 I’d never have anything done again but this year I got tired of not looking like how I feel and I wanted a more refined chin line like I used to have so I changed my mind. I’m still a little swollen but not much and what pleases me is that I won’t looked pulled or weird…or tired all the time. And my crows feet are still alive and well. I wish I’d been brave enough to not do anything but, instead, I chose to be a somewhat more glamorous grandma.
