I am literally a brand new Jane Fonda fan. My fandom is partly because of Grace and Frankie and partly (perhaps mostly) because of this book. It is absolutely brilliant as is the author. She is a profound writer. I am always inspired by brilliant and strong women. I have grown to have such a profound respect and admiration for Ms. Fonda’s life and character. I love how she recognizes that she isn’t perfect and that her life has included a great deal of privilege as well as pain. I love that she admits that she wasn’t the greatest parent with Vanessa in the beginning and that she isn’t really designed for marriage. I love that she challenges the tensions surrounding what society believes women are supposed to be! I love that she is passionate about important things real-world things, and how she is willing to name the things she would do differently but not frame them as regrets. I also admire her aging process and how she invites everyone to be present in all acts but especially that third act, I am encourage by how she is resisting the tired belief that age means one must “slip into decrepitude.” I am coming to the end of my twenties and I have been feeling an overwhelming sense of stress. With my 10 year high school reunion in the works this summer, I was feeling as though I’m not adding up to what the life of the late twenty-something should look like. This book has encouraged me to look at life as a continuum and not a destination. The most powerful message I hold on to is “it is more important to be interested than interesting”. With that mantra I feel like I can relinquish the ways I have bought into what my life should look like at 28. This memoir most certainly brought about a new Shero in my life!
