I’ve watch two Movies this week with extraordinary performances by aged to perfection actresses. The first I saw yrs ago when it first premiered in an Independent theater in my community. It was Maggie Smith in The Lady in the Van. The second was a new presentation on PBS with Glenda Jackson, titled, Elizabeth Is Missing. The performances by both were breath-taking and as important as anything either actress has done, Oscars accrued not withstanding. I found myself, as a Fonda Fan, wishing she could have another go at some great material like these to sink her acting skills into. I am torn in a selfish way by understanding the huge importance activism is especially with the crucial issues of our day and Jane’s deep commitment to making her voice heard towards solving those issues, and then clashes my joy & desire at seeing her as an actress with her wonderful skills and courage take us to an deeper empathy, understanding of ourselves and humanity. I’m selfish. I want both. But it’s a big ask even of someone who has great energy and commitment. Just sayin.
