The ‘Morning’ After

March 10th

I put ‘morning’ in quotes cause it’s 3:30p. I got up at noon to walk Tulea for her 4th birthday but I’m going back to bed as soon as I write this. First of all, gotta tell you: I cut out the NYT review for my scrapbook AND DIDN’T READ IT!!! Talk about discipline!!! I felt like an addict who’s been clean and sober, washing out someone’s hash pipe and not even taking a whiff. But last night, in the throes of the post opening bash, Eve Ensler made me promise I wouldn’t read any of the reviews—so I can’t. Not till it’s all over. As I said the other day in my blog, all of us in the cast know it’s a deep, strong play and that we are a powerful ensemble so whatever anyone else says or writes, we hold this in our hearts.

What a fun party it was! So many friends and well wishers. I was too preoccupied with the fun of it all to think of twittering. Rachel, my assistant, took some video (boy does she clean up good!!—a knock out!) and I may include it in a later blog depending on how well it turned out. But here are some pix from backstage in my dressing room right after. I have to laugh at me next to Dolly. She’s sooo white and I’m so—brown (To mention but one of the differences).

  4. <>

That is a perfect line! Love it. Great way to describe you cutting out those reviews and not taking a PEEK! How tempting it must have been.

Wishing you a great run with the play!

  5. Dear Jane,

Hey, this is Beverly from The Vagina Monologues- LA 2004. I’ve been following you on tweeter (beverlyinart) and reading your blogs regularly. Really enjoying hearing about the play and all your activities. Wish I could get to NY to see it, but wanted to let you know how nice it is to be able to keep up with you via these mediums.

You’ve been a role model for me for many many years and meeting/working with you in 2004 was one of the highlights of my life. I hope we can cross paths again one day!

    Much love & admiration,
    Beverly

  6. wonderful photos Jane, I reviews that I had read are on you side. Nice to see you stirred up a few things on the fire.

  7. A beautiful performance, Jane. An exciting night at the show. Enjoy the run and I hope to see you at the Tonys!

  8. Dear Ms. Fonda —
Congratulations on your triumphant opening night/return to Broadway. As I read each review, I am getting more and more excited about my trip from North Carolina to see your 3/24 performance. I’ve been a fan of your acting and political activism since I was a young teen, so it will be well worth the 40 year wait to see you perform live on stage.

  9. jane fonda you are somekind of great women. you also look younger then those younger then you .

  10. Hi Jane, congrdulations on the reviews! What great photo’s of you & family, Shirlee looks wonderful. How happy you must be to see Dolly, Rosie, & Eve! Now for that Best Actress Tony Award! all my best, Sam.

  11. Great pix, Jane! You look mahvelous, dahlink!

  12. Congratulations! Now you can kick back and enjoy the rest of the run and savor the experience even more deeply. Here’s a wild little side-note: I was just making my reservations for March 25 and I decided to look up the dates of the run of “Strange Interlude” in 1963. I actually gasped when I noticed that it closed June 29 — the very night I was born! Astonishing coincidence…

  13. Congratulations on the great reviews. Now i just wish I could find a job in this lousy economy so that I could come to NYC and see the play.
Well I guess I will see you in June…on the Tony Awards.Dust off your mantle.LOL

  14. Good for you not reading the reviews! Haha. I love the picture with Dolly. I LOVE her!!! Saw her back in November and she is so wonderful. I really hope I get to see the play. Thanks for aways blogging and Twittering. I’ve been following you on there. I’m “FondaMidler” I don’t think I need to explain the name 😉

My goodness, how tall is he?

Tall , dark , and very handsome!

Love the pic of you and Rosie!

  17. Jane, you are so beautiful and those pictures are amazing.
Aw not reading the reviews but cutting them up and putting in a scrapbook is cool, but how can you cut them with out reading them? i would go crazy.

Glad you all had a wonderful time, happy birthday to Tulea and hope you all have a wonderful day, and evening.

take care, and keep up the amazing job.

  18. I really enjoy your pictures. Thank you for taking the time to post them !!!

  19. Jane,

It’s so wonderful to read that the show went fantastically! Congratulations to you, the cast, and crew of 33 Variations!

Thank you for sharing the photos–so awesome! I’m happy you were surrounded by loved ones and friends. I’m sure it was quite an evening.

Love the “hash pipe” analogy. What a great sense of humor you have.

Can’t wait to see the video and I hope you get some rest after your big night.

    All my best,
    Amanda

  20. I have read every book and watched every movie. not because I want to be you – but because I want to understand the talent… the art. life is so busy… making money… surviving… i love to see the art in what you do. I’m speechless knowing – understanding how hard you work to give back. thanks. t.

  21. Bravo! The critics love the “ageless”, time transcending legendary Ms. Fonda. Was there ever a question? Rock on Jane! I know you always will.

  22. I loooove Jane Fonda. She’s a bit older than I but for some reason I’ve always had a crush on her… and Anne Bancroft. Brilliant actresses but always with a little mischief mixed in. When Jane was signing her book at Book Soup I hurried to get there but didn’t quite make it and by the time I arrived she was gone. I’ve been disappointed ever since. Anyway, she is one who has managed to stay stunning through the years and plastic surgery or not, she remains one of the great beauties of our time.

  23. Jane –

You are amazing! I hope when I get to NYC soon to see the play. You are a shining example of what good can come when one is brave enough to push past their fears and do what scares them. It’s so easy to get stuck and just do what’s comfortable. As an aspiring writer and a blogger, I find you to be such an inspiration creatively and also just as a human being. You live your life with so much spirit, class and dignity. I was so inspired actually that I blogged about you today. I know how busy you are, so I know it’s doubtful you’ll have time to read all the comments or the posting, but just in case here it is:

  24. Happy Birthday to Tulea!! There is something magical about opening night and the post opening bash where levels of adrenalin are still running high. You are all stars no matter what.
    Jane (South Africa)

  25. Ur the greatest.

  26. Are u the one that reads ur fan mail or do others.

  27. You are a true artist at a time when that word is used so loosely. So good to have you back where you belong.

  28. Ms. Fonda,
I’m so glad you are blogging. I’ve followed your career for a long time and have always admired your strength and character. I used your workout videos in the 80’s – they were groundbreaking. I’ve read your books too. Thank you for all you have done for all women everywhere. God bless you in all your endeavors.

thanks for the opportunity to talk to you!
    Sincerely,
    Georgia

  29. Thank you. You’re a knock-out yourself- beauty talent brains, all of it. what an exciting night it was! Video coming soon. 🙂

  30. Jane, you look amazing! Hopefully, you’ll be on the red carpet wearing a dazzling gown this summer for our charity event for G-CAPP! http://www.divabeautycreators.com/events.html

  31. Lovely photos.

I’d love to see a 9-5 sequel with you, Dolly and Lilly.

    Please.

  32. Your photos are wonderful. And your words, as always,
    are a joy to read.

Ms. Fonda, if you ever come back to Thermopolis,
Wyoming and would like to go out and see our petroglyphs and hang out, I would love to meet you.

  33. I just finished a Jane Fonda marathon. I was sick and began watching old films. I’ve probably seen Comes a Horseman 10 times.

To me, it was your best picture. I know that sounds strange because it never received the recognition of your other films.

I googled the website for the film to find out where it was filmed. I never would have suspected the mountains of Arizona. The direction was spectacular.

You once commented on how Bette Davis kept everything internal.. in films like Jezebel and Now Voyager…

Well, make no mistake – your performance opposite Caan was one of your best. The scene at the kitchen window, and again when you confessed your teenage indiscretion … is one for the history books.

I’ve said this over the years to other film lovers… but I’m continually shocked at how many have never heard of the film.

What a spectacular bit of acting my dear. Simply spectacular. You are spectacular. I’m a 61 year old grandma… and I was just like you in the Vietnam days… don’t let em get you down.

You are the best. One in a generation.

  34. Jane– the most touching photo is of you with your big handsome son! As the mother of two grown boys, I have many photos of myself, sandwiched between two good looking men…I just realized how vulnerable yet luminous we can look when surrounded by our adult children.
I admire you for your tremendous commitment, love and passion to things that matter.
    Go get ’em!

  35. OMG! The credits for Comes a Horseman said special thanks to the Dept of Interior and Coconino Forest in Arizona…. but I just did another search and found, after all these years…. you filmed it in the Wet Valley?

The reason I did the search is because the scenery looked like the Sangre De Cristos… I LIVED IN WESTCLIFF in the early 1970’s.

Now I know why the cinematography was so special to me… that was MY Wet Valley… my mom still lives in Pueblo!!

I KNEW that scenery was not Arizona!! I should have dug deeper!

anyway…. love you love you love you..

And Richard Farnsworth deserved an Oscar for his performance in that film as well.

  36. I have a profile on Linked in. I have always thought of you as a mentor. Strong minded, healthy, able to back up what you say, and leave mistakes with acceptance that this is what they were. You look great!

Good luck, break a leg I think that is correct. Women like you have always inspired me, I am a non-traditional student and I love it. I am trying to put together a concert to raise money for a very poor area of the country and Southern Illinois called Cairo, IL. The town is very historic and I remember it being filled with large homes and wealth growing up nearby in Paducah, Ky area. The concert will take place were Lilly Tomlin performed at the Shyrock at my campus SIUC, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, IL check out our Saluki Dogs! Egyptian dogs!
My question to you is have you ever met my uncle or have you heard him play Michael Joseph Smith? He is who will perform for my fundraiser for food and personal products and to move towards incorporating art and music so these children will stay motivated to remain in school and to give them hope for a better life.
You may see my uncle at his myspace.com/composerpianist page. You may have.
I was born in Atlanta. I hope you have a fantastic day.

  37. Hi Jane! It is amazing and a much welcomed joy to see that you are blogging! I so admire you and if whenever I grow up I can be a tenth of the person that you are I will be a happy soul! Great pics and I wish I could see your broadway play! BTW your son is very cute!

  38. Hey Jane, its great to see you blogging. What a very welcomed joy! I have long admired you and I must say that if whenever I do actually grow up-if I can be a tenth of the person you are I’ll be a happy soul!Great pics–I love Dolly too! BTW your son is very cute!

  39. The play sounds like it is wonderful. Congratulations! Alas, I live in Seattle so I doubt that I will be able to attend but I send warmest regards and appreciation for all your hard work and thanks for sharing your experience.

  40. Congratulations, dear one. You must have had a real blast! I have been working 24/7 on the Captain Planet launch on Joel Babbitt’s MNN. Whenever you have a minute, see http://www.MNN.com/captainplanet. I love your blog. xoxooxxo/b

  41. Ms. Fonda–Just finished reading your book. Fantastic. You are one big hearted, courageous and patriotic person. And you should know I am saying this as a West Pointer and former officer in the Airborne. I stand in awe of your courage. Jack

  42. I didn’t read your reviews either. When one listens to you talk about the play it transcends everything else — and that’s really what all of us out here care about: You, your work, what you believe in and why you believe in what is being said in “33 Variations”.

I can never remember regretting living in France because I wanted to see a play. . .

BTW: You look so young and beautiful in your backstage snaps.

    Warm regards,
    Tish

  43. welcome to the word of blogging from a huge fan of not only your acting but politics. The other night one of the cable channels had FTA on. I watched with my 19 year old daughter home from college. She started watching your movies last year while applying to college. She was applying to Vassar and looking for a “hook” for her essay. Anyway we found the urban legend of how you road naked on a motor cycle in one of the buildings. She thought that was really cool and went out and rented a bunch of your movies!!! FYI she got wait listed at Vassar and is at Swarthmore instead.
You are an inspiration to us middle aged
    women

  44. The review in the Atlanta Journal Constitution was glowing of your performance. Sounds like you are having great fun. Enjoy every minute.

    Lee from Atlanta

  45. Jane, you are soo beautiful! I’ve admired you from way back in the 70’s. I’ve seen you in lots of films, the latest was Georgia Rule. Whatever character you play is just magnificent!

I just watched your little song from the Vietnam days. What days those were!

Keep up your great work. I wish I could see you on stage. I bet you are brilliant! Take care and enjoy your latest success.

    Sherri

  46. Looks like it was a wonderful evening and so well deserved! I wish I still lived “back East” and could make the show! Happy belated bday to Tulea!

You look amazing Ms. Fonda. I have been a fan of yours for many many years. Just found your site today after reading a news clip on you on a local online channel.

Much love and wishes for your continued success, good health and happiness.

  47. You are and always have been an inspiration to me. When I was 12 I sent for an autographed photo of you, which I received. I’m 56 now! (I wish I kept it). Darn. I love reading about your current adventure.

I’m seeing the play in May!

  48. 9 to 5 with you and Dolly was just on.
It was a kick to see it again, and to realize it was just before PC began to appear at everyone’s desk. Wonder if it can be remade updated to today. Dolly was wondering bout that herself in an interview I saw recently (Larry King?)

  49. wow your son is a cutie!

  50. I love your blog – isn’t it fun! And addictive! The picture of the flowers in your last entry, “nervous. . . ” are absolutely beautiful. Good luck in your show. Wish I were a lot closer than Spokane, Washington. (You wouldn’t want to be here – 0 degrees this morning. b-r-r-r-r-r)
