Dec 21st…Winter Solstice

This is the shortest day of the year. I happen to feel it is the coolest day to be born on. The short, dark solstice here but it’s bright and long at the other side of the earth where it’s summer. I wasn’t even blogging this time last year. I’ve come a long way Baby! It’s a perfect birthday day here in L.A. Cloudy… A wanna-stay-inside-by-the-fire kinda day. Vanessa and my grandkids are on their way over. Troy will come in a little while. It feels good to have them all here. Lulu and Nathalie arrive Wednesday.

Last night was closing night for “Baby, It’s You” at the Pasadena Playhouse. What a wonderful theatre that is!!! The play will reopen at some point this winter in some new out-of-town theatre. Here are some pictures I took of the closing party last night.

    Singapore

    In Singapore, in the airport,
    A darkness was ripped from my eyes.
    In the women’s restroom, one compartment stood open.
    A woman knelt there, washing something
    in the white bowl.

    Disgust argued in my stomach
    and I felt, in my pocket, for my ticket.

    A poem should always have birds in it.
    Kingfishers, say, with their bold eyes and gaudy wings.
    Rivers are pleasant, and of course trees.
    A waterfall, or if that’s not possible, a fountain
    rising and falling.
    A person wants to stand in a happy place, in a poem.

    When the woman turned I could not answer her face.
    Her beauty and her embarrassment struggled together, and
    neither could win.
    She smiled and I smiled. What kind of nonsense is this?
    Everybody needs a job.

    Yes, a person wants to stand in a happy place, in a poem.
    But first we must watch her as she stares down at her labor,
    which is dull enough.
    She is washing the tops of the airport ashtrays, as big as
    hubcaps, with a blue rag.
    Her small hands turn the metal, scrubbing and rinsing.
    She does not work slowly, nor quickly, like a river.
    Her dark hair is like the wing of a bird.

    I don’t doubt for a moment that she loves her life.
    And I want to rise up from the crust and the slop
    and fly down to the river.
    This probably won’t happen.
    But maybe it will.
    If the world were only pain and logic, who would want it?

    Of course, it isn’t.
    Neither do I mean anything miraculous, but only
    the light that can shine out of a life. I mean
    the way she unfolded and refolded the blue cloth,
    The way her smile was only for my sake; I mean
    the way this poem is filled with trees, and birds.

  8. It’s great seeing you with the cast members of the play, “Baby It’s You”! I love seeing the pictures of Troy, Viva, Malcolm, and Miss Tulea! As always those grandchildren look absolutely adorable! With Nathalie and Lulu coming, you’re going to have everyone there for the holidays! What fun! I may be the millionth person to point this out, but babies born on the winter solstice back in the days when Stonehenge was in regular use (by my ancestors) were probably so special that they were slated to be priests/priestesses and spiritual leaders for their entire lives. Many Stone Age religious sites in Britian were obviously lined up for honoring the longest night, when they communicated with the dead (?). We don’t know for sure about the details of these pre-literate people but what remains of their culture indicates that this was the case.

    Here’s to a very special woman born on this day –Happy birthday, Jane!

I like your older post about wishing your Dad could see you doing theater. My Dad and I had some rocky times near the end (he probably had a series of small strokes) but now I remember the good times.

  32. Hello Miss Jane, Merry X-Mas and Happy birthday. Looks like you and Richard had fun. My birthday is on 12-12. Just got back from New Mexico. Spent the first X-Mas ever with my older brother. My wife and I had alot of fun. Learned how to play Blackjack and Craps the proper way. I gave my wife the new Rod Stewart cd. You look ravishing in the pics. Have a nice new year.     i love the look of your birthday cake. On my screen it looks a lovely seafoam. Keep on being a positive-type woman. You certainly have learned a lot since you started blogging…why ahead of me.

    Met your father a couple of years’ before his death when he was in rural Ontario filming. We spoke alone. He asked me some fascinating questions. If I ever meet you in person I’ll relate one question in particular. What a fabulous actor your father Henry Fonda. Runs in the family i guess!!!

  37. Hi Jane, I started reading your book “My life so far” two days ago and let me tell you it’s un-put-down-able. I never thought “Barbarella” and a first generation Australian 37 year old who has only just finished her university degree would have anything common – but we do. In the book you articulate so many of my own feelings and experiences even though our contexts are different. Furthermore, I have already recommended the book to men I know (including my partner) as I feel they would learn a lot about women by reading it.   46. I’m the kind of guy who passions to taste new things. Presently I’m building my own pv panels. I am making it all alone without the assistance of my staff. I am using the internet as the only path to acheive that. I saw a truly brilliant site that explains how to create pv panels and wind generators. The web site explains all the steps involved in solar panel construction.

    I am not sure bout how accurate the information given there is.
