My name is Olivia and I’m 19 I’m about to close the book as a teen and enter my 20s in February. I’ve learned a whole lot on this journey since the beginning of my teen years. I’ve been quite the rebellious teen sometimes but mostly the sneaky one lol. My parents thought I was completely innocent until this year when a lot of my secrets came out of the darkness. What I’ve learned as a teen is to never be ashamed to be yourself. It took me until the end of my teen years to do that I always felt like I had to do so much to be accepted and that wasn’t true at all. I learned to understand my mother and why she didn’t exactly know how to show love because she had so much brokenness and scars of her own. I’ve learned to educate myself. Instead of just being raised to believe something I chose my own beliefs. Being from a republican state is very hard for me because I don’t have the same beliefs and opinions. It’s hard for me to sit at dinner tables where politics come up and I’m surrounded by die hard republicans that don’t understand me and choose to look down on me if I voice my beliefs that aren’t the same as theirs. whether it’s climate change or the right for women to make decisions for their own body etc. as teen closing the chapter I feel the need to fight for what’s right even if some of the people where I’m from don’t like it. I feel the need to be out in the streets protesting and Jane motivated me to do that. I even pissed Republican family members off by wearing her mug shot t shirt to family gatherings (I thought my grandpa was going to have a stroke over it lol). I’ve learned use my voice as a teen and to no longer want to be seen as “the good girl” that just sits in the corner and smiles and doesn’t speak up when she wants and needs to. And then of course I’ve learned some fun stuff like partying, smoking (I actually got caught smoking weed this past month and got in a lot of trouble for it) that’s probably not good for me to say but it happened lol. I’ve experienced heartbreak (I was cheated on) but it made me stronger and it also made me dive deeper into my music and song writing. I’ve had highs and lows but I wouldn’t trade it for anything because it made me grow. I’m thankful for everything I learned and Jane being such an amazing person to look up to all these years she is so brave and that taught me to be brave as well.
