Hello I saw the play, The Trial of Jane Fonda, in London last night starring Anne Archer as Jane. I know it is not endorsed by Jane but she was interviewed by the playwright, Terry Jastrow as part of his research. I was stunned by the impact Jane’s visit to North Vietnam had in 1972 and, as a direct consequence of it, President Nixon scaled back military operations thereby saving North Vietnamese and American lives. Why is this not more widely known?

I read Jane’s autobiography. I didn’t know Nixon did that. I wonder why Jane didn’t endorse it. Did it not portray the truth? She really got a bad rap for her visit to VN. I’ve always appreciated everything she did for the anti war movement.
Many thanks for your reply, Deborah. One of the play’s themes is how images form our memories so our memory of Jane’s trip to North Vietnam is dominated by the image of her sitting on the anti-aircraft gun (which was not in use at the time) whereas the visit was about much more than that and was mainly taken up with visits to bombing sites which had badly affected North Vietnamese citizens. The play’s thesis was that the tremendous amount of good which was achieved by the visit, not least the scaling back of the war, has been eclipsed by that image. I was very young and a Brit at the time of the visit so it was a complete revelation, which was powerfully reinforced when I met an Australian anti-war protestor (Australia unlike the UK participated in the Vietnamese war) shortly after seeing the play who also visited North Vietnam and confirmed how important Jane’s visit had been in influencing Australian opinion.
