Claudia, Here’s my take on that. Grace said she thought her marriage was “good enough”. Even her husband thought that she didn’t really love him and it wouldn’t hurt her to lose him. But she was hurt to find that she wasn’t loved like she assumed she was. She has been looking for passion like she felt for the Sam Elliott character, but she couldn’t have him. Nick has brought her confidence and safety in his devotion. He makes her feel loved. I like Nick. His character has been quite perfect in his willingness to accept Grace’s love of Frankie. But I do not want him to replace Frankie, nor do I want Frankie to be a third wheel. There is only one solution for me. Nick has to die. Grace needs to have this experience with Nick just as Frankie needed to have one more fling with Sol in order to know that it was over. We have been exploring the experience of aging through them. One of the most prevalent experiences is loss of a spouse through death. Grace can have that experience. So the marriage to me is insurance that NETFLICKS plasn on more seasons, because I think a lot of us will be unhappy if Grace and Frankie don’t end up being with each other at the end. I also don’t want that to be a default choice. Women are with women in later years for many reasons. Sometimes they choose that special partnership because they bring out the best in each other and are the best support to get their mutual needs met. I think that’s what Grace and Frankie show us. It’s not a default choice. So here’s hoping with fingers crossed. Sorry Nick.

Of course, to not be a default choice, Grace would have to choose Frankie over Nick. Hummm.
